Outside, I took a deep breath of the fresh air and turned toward SoMa and Ophelia’s office. When I entered, there were voices at the conference room at the end. I walked down the hall toward it, waving to Sameen. She was on the phone, and she returned my wave with a smile, then immediately her face went hard.

“No,” she said sternly into the phone. “No, you are not going to tell the judge that you’re just having a hard time adulting when we get to court tomorrow. You hear me? Absolutely not. You know who gets to use that as an excuse? College freshmen who are scared to call the dentist and make an appointment to get their teeth cleaned without their mothers doing it for them for the first time. You? You’re a thirty-six-year-old man facing five counts of federal tax evasion. If you tell the judge your excuse is that you aren’t good at adulting, he’s going to throw your ass in jail and you’re going to deserve it.”

I laughed to myself and continued on. At the end of the hall, in the conference room, Taylor sat in one of the chairs at the end, her heeled boots up on the table as she read from a manila folder opened in front of her. When she heard me come in, she dropped it to her lap to look at me and grinned.

“Poppy. Nice of you to join the party. I hear you’re responsible for bringing Ophelia her latest murder? I was hoping she’d have something juicy to sink her teeth into. I’m bored of setting honey traps for moron husbands who don’t understand the concept of monogamy. But this looks like we might have a serial killer on our hands.”

Taylor was fun, but also I was pretty sure she was a bit of a sociopath.

Ophelia walked in then, holding a USB key in her hand. “Poppy, nice to see you. I got the files from Morgan, and I was about to have a look at them. I figured Taylor could help. She loves a creepy case.”

“I love finding serial killers. It’s only happened once. I bet I could make this one regret being born,” she said wistfully.

“There’s a happy thought,” I said as Ophelia moved to the back of the room to plug the USB drive into the built-in computer that projected onto the far wall. The screen flashed to life. A number of files appeared on the screen, but before Ophelia was able to open any of them, a voice pierced through, coming from the hallway.

“Ophelia Ellis?” a woman called out. “I’m here to see Ophelia. Where is she?”

“She sounds mad,” Taylor mouthed at me, and I raised my eyebrows. She was not wrong. The woman stomped toward the conference room as Ophelia emerged.

“Hello, I’m Ophelia,” she greeted her. “How can I help?”

“They tell me you’re the best, and you damn well better be, because no one can tell me where my husband is, and we’ve got a meeting with investors tomorrow.
